Supported files and safety limits
Input
JPEG, PNG, or WebP; one file at a time. The maximum is 15 MiB, 4096px on either side, and 12 megapixels. GIF, SVG, and HEIC are rejected with a specific message.
Output dimensions
Each result is limited to 8192px on either side and 24 megapixels. Unavailable factors are disabled and explain which limit they would exceed.
Combined work
Selected outputs may total up to 60 megapixels. Each generated file is limited to 50 MiB, and a ZIP to 150 MiB, to reduce browser memory pressure.
Transparency
PNG and WebP can preserve transparent pixels. JPEG cannot, so transparent areas are deliberately filled white before encoding.
Under the hood
High-quality interpolation, not generated detail
The tool uses Pica’s high-quality MKS2013 filter rather than relying on a single basic Canvas draw. Its optional unsharp pass can restore a little edge definition after enlargement without synthesizing new objects, textures, or facial details.
None applies no extra unsharp mask. Natural uses a restrained setting for general images. Strong gives soft sources more definition, but can reveal halos around already-sharp edges, so the 100% comparison is useful.
Results are generated sequentially. A finished Canvas is encoded and released before the next factor starts, while the smaller Blob outputs remain available for individual or ZIP download.
Honest comparison
Use 100% when the difference is subtle
Fit is convenient for the whole composition, but shrinking both layers can hide edge differences. In 100% mode the stage uses the output’s actual pixel dimensions. Scroll or pan to a detailed area, then drag the accessible divider; both layers stay perfectly aligned over the same image region.
Common questions
FAQ
Does this tool generate new details with AI?
No. It interpolates existing pixels and can apply a light unsharp mask. It does not hallucinate or invent high-frequency detail that was absent from the original.
Why is an upscale factor disabled?
That factor would exceed either 8192px on one side or 24 megapixels for one output. Choose a lower factor or start from a smaller image.
Why can’t I select every available factor together?
The combined selection is capped at 60 megapixels to avoid excessive work and memory use. Remove one or more factors before starting.
Which output format should I choose?
WebP is a practical default for the web. JPEG is widely compatible but removes transparency. PNG is lossless and preserves transparency, though a large upscale can create a very large file.
