Background Remover & Image Cutout
Processed in your browser
Background removed
The checkerboard shows the transparent area of your finished image.
- Original
- Cutout
- File
Turn one JPG, PNG, HEIC, or WebP image into a transparent cutout. Choose PNG or WebP for the result; the tool keeps the source pixel dimensions and does not add resizing controls.
Your selected image is not uploaded. The browser downloads the background-removal model from IMG.LY when needed, then analyzes and exports your image locally in this tab.
Quick guide
Three steps, all in this tab
- 1 Choose one image. Drop it above or use the file picker.
- 2 Choose PNG or WebP. PNG is lossless; WebP is often smaller for use on the web.
- 3 Remove and download. The transparent result keeps the original pixel dimensions.
Before you start
Supported files and limits
Input formats
JPG/JPEG, PNG, HEIC, and WebP. The tool checks the file contents as well as the extension and accepts one image at a time. SVG and HEIF are not supported.
Safety limits
Up to 30 MiB, 8192px on either side, and 50 megapixels total—the same input limits as the WebP converter.
Output formats
PNG preserves the cutout without lossy compression. WebP also keeps transparency and offers an adjustable quality setting for a smaller download.
HEIC photos
The HEIC decoder loads only when required. For Live Photos or multi-image containers, this version uses the representative first still image and does not include the video portion.
Under the hood
How the background removal works
A browser-based machine-learning model estimates the main foreground subject and creates an alpha mask. Transparent pixels replace the detected background, and the result is encoded as your chosen format.
The source dimensions are restored for the final image. The tool does not include cropping, resizing, brush editing, or background replacement, so the workflow stays focused on one task.
Model and WebAssembly files are downloaded on the first run and cached by the browser. Later runs are usually faster, but clearing browser storage can require those files to be downloaded again.
Background removal uses IMG.LY’s open-source background-removal library, released under the GNU AGPL v3 license.
Best results
Give the subject a clear edge
Clear people, products, pets, and objects usually work best. Fine hair, fur, glass, smoke, shadows, motion blur, and a subject whose colors closely match the background can produce imperfect edges. This version does not provide a manual cleanup brush, so inspect the checkerboard preview before using the result.
Common questions
FAQ
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The selected image is read and processed by code in this tab. The model files come from IMG.LY’s CDN, but your image, filename, dimensions, and generated Blob URL are not sent with that download.
Why is the first run slower?
Background removal needs a substantial machine-learning model plus browser runtime files. They download on demand and are cached, so processing another image is normally faster.
Should I choose PNG or WebP?
Choose PNG for a lossless file that you may edit later. Choose WebP when you want a transparent image that is often smaller for a website, online store, or other browser-based use.
Does this tool resize or crop the result?
No. The output keeps the decoded source width and height. Use the separate WebP Converter & Resizer if you need smaller pixel dimensions after creating the cutout.
